The reign of King Alfred the Great marked a turning point in early medieval England, which was overwhelmed by Scandinavian conquerors. While Mercia, Northumbria, and East Anglia fell, the kingdom of Wessex, under Alfred's leadership, withstood the onslaught and transitioned to offense. The king united the Anglo-Saxons and implemented reforms, including the creation of a fleet and a system of fortresses, to counter the Vikings. By the end of his reign, Alfred had not only expelled the Vikings from Wessex but also subjugated other kingdoms, laying the groundwork for a unified English state.
