In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the detective genre, then known as the criminal novel, was not favored by critics but was greatly loved by readers. Andrei Efimovich Zarin, a writer, journalist, and editor, is considered one of the founders of the Russian detective novel. Throughout his prolific career, he authored over a hundred books. During the 1890s, his work often featured "slice-of-life" novellas and novels exploring the inner lives of "offended and overlooked" individuals, such as minor officials, firefighters, photographers, and circus actors.
This two-volume collection includes selected works by Andrei Zarin, notably his detective stories. While crime was not the central theme of his oeuvre, his criminal novels were regarded as genre classics in pre-revolutionary Russia.
