In 1943 Korea, sixteen-year-old Hana lives on Jeju Island under Japanese occupation, belonging to a lineage of female divers known as haenyeo. Her younger sister eagerly awaits her turn to join them. Their idyllic life by the ocean is shattered when fate separates the sisters, sending Hana to face hardships in a foreign land. She holds onto the hope of finding her way home. Decades later, in 2011, Amy confronts her past, seeking reconciliation and her sister, recalling the events of their childhood.
