Леонид Пантелеев (настоящее имя Алексей Иванович Еремеев) родился в 1908 году в Петербурге в семье казачьего офицера, героя русско-японской войны; мать - Александра Сергеевна - происходила из купеческой семьи. В 1918 году отец Алексея пропал без вести, и семья, спасаясь от голода, переехала в Ярославскую губернию. Спустя три года мальчик после множества приключений вернулся в Петроград и за воровство и авантюры был направлен в трудовую школу имени Ф.М. Достоевского (ШКИД), где и получил прозвище "Лёнька Пантелеев". В школе он встретил друга и будущего соавтора Григория Белых, с которым в 1927 году выпустил книгу "Республика ШКИД". Кроме этой книги Леонид Пантелеев написал произведения, ставшие классикой отечественной детской литературы - повесть "Пакет", посвященную Гражданской войне, главный герой которой, Петя Трофимов, был признан "литературным братом" Василия Тёркина (1933); рассказы "Честное слово" (1941) и "Новенькая" (1943); цикл "Белочка и Тамарочка" (1940-1947); "Буква "ты"" (1945) и многие другие.
