Coral hunts dangerous sea monsters, marilens, every night. Her family is obligated to catch and breed them for the rulers' deadly tournament—a race for glory. Despite their hard work, Coral's family receives no privileges: her parents quarrel, there's not enough money for her sister's treatment, and her brother suffers from poisoning. Deep in debt and despair, Coral decides to enter the race for glory, hoping for honor, money, and an escape from poverty. She must compete against seasoned rivals and discern who poses the greater threat: the sea monsters, the rulers, or the rebels.
