In the autumn of 1710, Stockholm is gripped by plague, a disease that spares no one, not even the privileged. Magdalena and Ebba's mother dies, and the sisters are sent to Svartdamms Castle to escape the epidemic. They are to stay with their aunt, Baroness Katarina, their mother's twin sister, who is a stern and domineering woman. The baroness has a sixteen-year-old stepson, Axel, whom no one has seen for a long time, and the sisters are forbidden to inquire about him. One night, Magdalena encounters Axel, and they find solace and support in each other within the castle's dark walls, which hold many secrets.
