The war continues, and Volkov is convinced the enemy is employing sorcery. At a moment of betrayal from within and a general abandoning his troops, women come to the aid of the cavalier. One is prepared to confront a dangerous witch fighting for the opposing side, another secures his home and provides a reliable rear guard, a third is carrying an heir, and a fourth guards his interests at the ducal court.
The sole complication is that each of Volkov's female allies cannot stand the others. The saying "seven axes lie together, but two spinning wheels lie apart" proves apt, as a war among women can threaten calamities men can scarcely imagine.
