David Seymour (also known as Szymin) was born in Warsaw in 1911 and trained in graphic arts and colour printing in Leipzig before moving to Paris to study at the Sorbonne. Advised by photographer David Rappaport, he received his first 35 mm camera in 1932 and soon contributed to leading magazines such as Vu, Regards and Ce Soir, documenting major events across Europe. His most acclaimed work comes from the Spanish Civil War, where he captured the suffering of civilians, and later from a UNICEF‑commissioned study of post‑war children. The book presents the full span of Seymour’s output, including portraits of figures like Bernard Berenson, and concludes with his role as a founding Magnum member and president at the time of his death in 1956 while photographing the Suez crisis.
