The novel's events take place in late July and early August 1941. The plot centers on the heroic feat of the 95th Border Guard Detachment and the Kolomyia Border Outpost. Instructors from the Lviv Service Dog Training School are also involved. On July 30, 1941, in an unequal hand-to-hand combat, they halted the advance of the "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler" brigade near the Ukrainian village of Legedzino. Approximately five hundred border guards and over a hundred service dogs perished.
