Конец XIX века. В деревне Кокушкино во время зимних забав на реке обнаружено вмёрзшее тело мужчины. Вскоре на дне реки находят тело женщины с признаками насильственной смерти. Late 19th century. In the village of Kokushkino, during winter pastimes on the river, a man's body frozen in the ice is discovered. Soon after, a woman's body with signs of violent death is found at the river bottom. Vladimir Ulyanov, the son of the estate owner and a former student, offers his assistance to the local constable in the investigation. When his help is not accepted, Vladimir takes on the case himself, aided by the estate manager.
