In the world of Belovodye, the gift of fire is believed to belong exclusively to men known as deivas. This changes when Itrida unexpectedly gains this power. Orphaned and displaced, she wanders, seeking a way to be rid of her unwanted gift. However, her past catches up, endangering those she cares about. Meanwhile, the deivas Mariy Bolotnik investigates the demise of his family and fiancée, a quest that leads him to Kamenka. There, he encounters Itrida, a young woman possessing the firebearer's gift, and begins to unravel her connection to the murderers.
