Emperor Maximilian I viewed his tournaments, jousts, and festivities as a distinct art form. A significant sovereign in early modern Europe, he understood the diplomatic and networking power of public displays. Between 1512 and 1515, Maximilian commissioned an extensive, detailed manuscript illustrating 64 tournaments. The 255 miniatures, adorned with gilt and silver, depict not only jousting scenes from the Habsburg court but also an allegorical epic of Maximilian, known as "Freydal," proving his love for a noble lady.
