This detailed exposition introduces students with little or no prior knowledge to the theory of Vassiliev knot invariants. It begins with a basic introduction to knot theory and knot invariants before delving into Vassiliev invariants. The book covers the algebras of Jacobi diagrams and 3-graphs, functions on these algebras via Lie algebras, and constructions of a universal invariant using iterated integrals and the Drinfeld associator. The theory is extended to framed knots, and topics like Gauss diagram formulae are discussed, concluding with Vassiliev's original construction.
