In the autumn of 1942, sixteen-year-old Isla Quinn and her younger brother Miles move to the provincial town of Sterling after their parents' death. They are taken in by the family of their mother's old friend. Isla brings only her mother's favorite book of Shakespearean poems and her mother's wedding ring. Soon, the siblings notice that inexplicable and strange events are occurring in Sterling. Isla begins to suspect that the key to the town's mysteries lies within their mother's old book or perhaps within their mother herself, whom Isla realizes she barely knew.
