The history of Jews in the Caucasus dates back to deep antiquity, shrouded in literary and oral traditions. Modern Caucasian Jews retain only vague recollections of their origins. However, as noted by travelers in the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries, a legend persisted among them: they were descendants of the ten lost tribes of Israel, settled in Media by Assyrian kings. This collection features essays by Russian ethnographers and travelers, presenting interesting historical, ethnographic, and statistical information.
