Hans Memling, a pivotal Flemish Primitive artist (c. 1435–1494), is deeply connected to the city of Bruges. His significant contributions to Early Netherlandish painting are evident in masterpieces like the St John Altarpiece and the St Ursula Shrine, both created for St John’s Hospital. Bruges remains a key location to experience seven of this 15th-century master’s most important works, housed at the St John’s Hospital Museum and the Groeninge Museum. This book offers a detailed examination of Memling’s striking paintings, inviting readers to fully appreciate his artistic legacy.
