The conspiracy to destroy Annur's ruling family is far from over. Emperor's daughter Ader, learning who killed her father, is thrown into confusion. She decides to leave Dawn Palace to find allies and challenge those who plotted to overthrow the Malkenians. Few trust her, but under the protection of an ancient goddess of light, Ader manages to gather an army. Meanwhile, vast hordes of warlike nomads gather at the empire's border, conspiring with Valyn, an apostate from an elite combat unit and Ader's brother. Both pursue the same goal—revenge for their father's death—but a clash between them seems inevitable. Kaden, the rightful heir to the Netesar Throne, infiltrates the capital with two strange companions possessing special knowledge that could save or destroy Annur.
