The story of the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress exemplifies the courage and self-sacrifice of Soviet soldiers at the very beginning of the war. Due to leadership miscalculations, the garrison was almost entirely annihilated in the initial moments of the attack. However, had the fortress been prepared for defense, supplied with weapons, food, and water, the damage inflicted on German forces could have been exponentially greater, potentially influencing the war's outcome. The narrative begins in the autumn of 1939 with Stalin's directive to prepare for a possible German invasion of the USSR.
