This book offers a comprehensive photographic record of London's council estate buildings, many of which were once envisioned as utopian projects. Following the UK’s 1919 Housing Act, state-owned public housing saw rapid development, a trend that largely ceased by the 1980s. These estates have since experienced varied fates, with some becoming notorious while others are now highly sought-after residential areas.
The collection documents 275 estates across the City and every London borough, representing a wide array of architectural designs. These include prefabricated, self-built, Modernist, and Brutalist styles, with over 30 structures recognized as protected historic buildings.
