The novel's plot unfolds rapidly, introducing the reader to a diverse cast of characters, from Russian émigrés in Europe to emerging revolutionaries and leaders of street unrest. The protagonist, a former Central Committee employee, falls in love with the wife of a persecuted dissident who has returned to Moscow. His life changes dramatically when he comes into possession of his grandfather's archive, which researched the enigmatic "Moss." He finds himself in Paris and is abducted by the mysterious "Venetian Club," an organization also interested in "Moss." The concept of "Moss" symbolizes a continental idea, representing the eternal struggle between Land and Sea, Eurasia and the Atlantic.
