A snowstorm traps a group of strangers in a boarding house, and one of them is a murderer. Suspects include the newlywed couple running the house, whose suspicions nearly wreck their marriage. Others present are a spinster with a curious background, an architect who seems better suited to be a chef, a retired Army major, a strange man claiming his car overturned, and a difficult jurist. A policeman arrives on skis, and the jurist is killed. To uncover the murderer's pattern, the policeman probes everyone's background, revealing many secrets.
