Eleven soldiers' letters fall into the hands of a female postwoman who must read them before sending them to their recipients. These letters weave together eleven soldiers' fates with the life of the main character, her husband, the chief physician of a military hospital, their children, colleagues, and fellow villagers. The narrative also encompasses the story of a young girl who sacrificed her future to save a child from a booby trap, and a mysterious nameless man hunted by Ukrainian nationalists.
