Igor Olegovich Kniazky, 2019
This book by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor I.O. Kniazky focuses on the personality of one of the most famous Roman emperors β Nero. The ruler of the Roman Empire, infamously branded as the Antichrist by Christians and repeatedly cursed by Roman writers as a cruel tyrant who destroyed the most worthy Romans, has captivated historians for nearly two millennia. He was the student and ward of the great philosopher Seneca, whom he later condemned to death. He is also known as the first persecutor of Christians and the cause of the deaths of apostles Peter and Paul. Simultaneously, Nero was a devotee of high theatrical art, repulsed by the bloody gladiatorial games common among Romans. Nero was an actor, singer, and musician. Even as he faced death, he lamented not his lost imperial power, exclaiming: "What a great artist dies with me!" The book delves into these tragic pages of Roman history, the people of that era, and the complex, contradictory figure of Nero himself.
