Nikita Khrushchev: The Creator of the Thaw continues the study begun in the previous volume “Reformer,” examining the most successful decade of Soviet history, 1953‑1964. Written in an accessible, lively style, the book details the achievements, problems, setbacks and victories of 1957‑1960, when Khrushchev pushed economic decentralisation, introduced the defence doctrine of “adequate defence,” and reduced conventional forces to fund the economy. It also describes the political liberalisation that sparked a surge of young poets, writers, musicians and visual artists, bringing names such as Yevtushenko, Voznesensky, Shnitke and Rodion Shchedrin to prominence.
