The third volume of "The History of Middle-earth" offers a unique look at the creation of Middle-earth's mythology through poetic retellings of two significant tales: the legends of Túrin and Lúthien. The first poem, the unpublished "Lay of the Children of Húrin," focuses on the tragedy of Túrin Turambar. The second, the "Lay of Leithian," a primary source for the Beren and Lúthien tale in "The Silmarillion," recounts the quest for the Silmarils and the confrontation with Morgoth. The poems are accompanied by commentary on the evolution of the tales of the Elder Days. The book also includes a critical analysis of the "Lay of Leithian" by C.S. Lewis.
