Vladimir Nabokov, 2025, Series: Nabokovsky Korpus
"Under the Sign of the Illegitimate" (1947) is Vladimir Nabokov's first novel written after relocating from France to America during a challenging period. Departing from his usual focus, Nabokov chose a socially significant and contemporary theme: the life of a prominent individual under a totalitarian regime. The narrative centers on world-renowned philosopher Adam Krug, who, after losing his wife, must protect his young son from the "equalizers" seeking to force his compliance.
However, Nabokov himself highlighted the novel's core theme as "the beating of Krug's loving heart," emphasizing the importance of the pages dedicated to David and his father. This edition features a new translation, the author's preface, and translator's notes and commentary.
