"Virgin Soil Upturned" is one of Mikhail Sholokhov's significant works, shedding light on the complex and tragic episodes of collectivization in the Don region. Worker Semyon Davydov arrives in the village of Gremyachy Log to help the Don Cossacks transition to new collective farming methods. He succeeds in organizing a collective farm amidst opposition from kulaks. However, his methods of persuading the poor diverge from the coercive measures employed by the local party cell secretary, Makar Nagulny. Following several confrontations, their shared goal eventually leads the characters to reconciliation.
