Abau Al-Alaa Al-Maarrai, 2016
Considered "one of the most complex and unusual texts in Arabic literature," this work is a lengthy response by Abu l-'Ala' al-Ma'arri to a letter from a grammarian. Through biting irony, al-Ma'arri imagines the grammarian's journey to Heaven after death, where he encounters historical poets and philologists. The narrative also includes glimpses of Hell and conversations with the Devil and various heretics, offering a satirical commentary on popular beliefs about the afterlife.
