Asya Demishkevich, 2024
Thirteen-year-old Andrey faces challenges at school and home. His mother has passed away, a fact he initially concealed from his classmates. Difficult relations with his father and stepmother lead to a decision to send him to the army. Initially, his presence there seems out of place, but it soon becomes apparent that some of his fellow soldiers are far stranger. Asya Demishkevich's novel reinterprets the canons of Russian fairy tales, presenting archetypes and folklore characters in a disturbingly relevant context.
