Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko, 2024, Series: Volzhsky Roman
The Volga River and the vast Volga region served as the inspiration for a cycle of works by Vladimir Korolenko. Having lived in Nizhny Novgorod for over a decade, the writer explored and described life in the Trans-Volga forests, along the banks of the Vetluga River, as well as the daily lives of artisans near the Oka, Kerzhenets schismatics, merchants, and townspeople in small towns. Korolenko referred to the Volga as the "cradle of Russian romanticism," recalling the campaigns of Razin and Pugachev. His stories, such as "At the Eclipse," "Birds of Heaven," and "The River Plays," feature reflections on the past, present, and future of the Russian people. The period from 1885 to 1895, known as the Nizhny Novgorod decade, became one of the most significant in the writer's creative output.
