Leonid Panteleev, Grigory Belykh - 2025
The Republic of ShKID presents true stories from the pupils of the Dostoevsky School, an orphanage for homeless children that existed in the 1920s. Amidst the post-revolutionary turmoil, hunger, and poverty of Russia, many minors found themselves on the streets, resorting to theft and begging to survive. The school's director, Viktor Sorokin (Vikniksor), channeled the restless energy of these former juvenile delinquents towards rehabilitation, recognizing their desire to become productive members of society. Despite occasional rebellions and escape attempts, the students remained, driven by a desire to learn and 'make something of themselves'. The authors, former pupils themselves, capture the authentic atmosphere of ShKID life, filled with tragic, grim, and often hilariously funny details.
