Приключенческая повесть «Республика ШКИД» о жизни беспризорных детей в школе-коммуне имени Достоевского (ШКИД) была впервые опубликована в 1927 году. Ее авторы — Г. Г. Белых (1906-1938) и А. И. Еремеев (1908-1987), писавший под псевдонимом Л. Пантелеев, — сами были в детстве беспризорниками, поэтому повесть имеет отчасти автобиографический характер. Издание включает также восемнадцать «шкидских» рассказов Пантелеева и Белых. Книгу украшают иллюстрации, выполненные знаменитым графиком Н.А. Тырсой (1887-1942).
