Alma returns to Trieste, the city of her childhood, following her father's death. She must confront her past, recalling her family: grandparents with Austro-Hungarian roots, her mother who worked with the mentally ill, and her father, connected to Marshal Tito. A particular anxiety surrounds meeting Vili, a former lover and now an adversary, who will deliver her father's final message. The novel explores themes of identity and memory against the backdrop of Yugoslavia's dissolution.
