During the winter of 1927-1928, two young American art historians, Alfred Barr and Jerry Abbott, visited the Soviet Union. Shortly after their return, Barr became the director of the newly formed Museum of Modern Art in New York, with Abbott as his deputy. While traveling through the USSR, they kept diaries documenting the cultural situation on the eve of accelerated socialist construction and the end of the Russian avant-garde era. Their entries capture impressions of new theatrical and cinematic repertoire, visits to museum collections nationalized by the new government, and encounters with prominent figures of Soviet culture.
