This work by Doctor of Art History Mikhail Nikolaevich Sokolov continues the exploration of Early Modern European garden and park art. The book reveals the patterns of interaction between parks and the historical landscape, covering Great Britain, France, Italy, and Russia from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It places special emphasis on the conceptual understanding of the garden and wild nature as fundamental topoi. Shifting from the "principle of paradise" in previous research, this study focuses on the metaphor of the "storm in the garden," symbolizing destructive creation and the integration of natural elements into art. The research analyzes the evolving image of Mother Nature, the iconography of storms, bad weather, and shadows, and the "drama of the landscape" within garden poetics.
