Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished student, becomes obsessed with the idea that "great" individuals are permitted to destroy "unworthy" life to preserve "worthy" life. He commits a double murder of an old pawnbroker and her sister to fund his studies with the stolen money. However, his psyche cannot bear the weight of the act. Through a bitter process of self-awareness, he learns to understand punishment as atonement and experiences the redemptive power of love.
