In the early 17th century, English pilot John Blackthorne's ship is wrecked off the coast of Japan, leading to his capture and accusation of piracy. His knowledge of geography, warfare, and mathematics, along with his strong character, attracts the attention of Lord Toranaga, a powerful figure in Japan. Toranaga takes Blackthorne under his protection, intending to use his skills in his struggle for power. To survive in a foreign land, the Englishman learns the language and customs, becoming a samurai, all while holding onto the hope of one day returning home.
