This novel depicts the devastating HIV epidemic that swept through China in the early 1990s. A government initiative to develop a blood plasma market led to the establishment of numerous blood collection points, particularly in rural areas. Seduced by the promise of wealth, impoverished peasants flocked to donate blood. Due to unsanitary conditions, this resulted in widespread HIV infection, leading to a catastrophic epidemic that decimated entire villages. The author's research for this book spanned three years, during which he worked as an assistant to a Beijing anthropologist.
