Churches in and around the city are being set ablaze, one after another, with victims found at the scenes bearing signs of torture. Authorities suspect a satanic cult and ritualistic killings, but opt to downplay the events due to upcoming elections. Fearing the police might not resolve the case, the priest of a burned church asks his friend, former investigator Pavel Sedov, to conduct a private inquiry. Sedov reluctantly agrees and soon uncovers a strange connection between the arsons, five young women, and a play staged years ago based on a medieval book.
