Following the Allied victory in North Africa, a thousand Italian soldiers were sent to a remote island off the Scottish coast. The island's inhabitants, having lived under the threat of invasion for three years, fear the prisoners, viewing them as bloodthirsty enemies. However, for two sisters, Dorothy and Constance, they are merely emaciated, sick, and wounded men unaccustomed to the cold Orkney winter. The sisters help the prisoners as best they can. After their parents' death, the sisters relied solely on each other, but the arrival of the Italian soldiers threatens their bond. One fateful evening, a choice must be made with devastating consequences.
