This book examines how formal linguistic methods can illuminate the structure of verbal interaction. It specifically focuses on the coherence of successive utterances in continuous spoken discourse. Initially, it presents a model for discourse analysis developed for classroom teacher-pupil interactions. Subsequently, it reviews efforts to apply this model to diverse discourse types, including committee discussions, doctor-patient interviews, broadcast conversations, and lectures. The expansion of the original model has led to innovations and new insights, presented through complementary themes.
