The International Military Tribunal, or Nuremberg Trials, was established by the victorious Allied powers following World War II to hold Nazis accountable for their crimes and restore a sense of justice. While the Soviet Union's role in organizing this landmark trial is central, it is often overlooked in contemporary Western scholarship. Francine Hirsch demonstrates that without the USSR's participation, Nuremberg would not have happened; Soviet jurists developed the legal framework that defined war itself as an international crime. However, Stalin's attempts at remote control and the US prosecution's strategic impositions complicated matters, while the Nazi defense openly questioned Soviet complicity in crimes against peace.
