A headless female body is discovered in the center of Moscow. According to documents found at the scene, her name is Svetlana Tarasova. Colonel Lev Gurov of the Ministry of Internal Affairs summons the deceased's husband for identification. However, he claims the woman is not his wife, who reportedly ran off with another man a week prior. Gurov suspects the husband, but relatives who arrive state they do not recognize the deceased. The investigators are faced with a perplexing mystery.
