Императрица Анна Иоанновна, опираясь на гвардию, разорвала эти ограничения и продолжила курс Петра Великого. В Европе шла борьба за польский престол, шведы вели тайную переписку с турками, угрожавшими русским землям, а союзники России были ненадежны.

Following the Treaty of Pruth, Russia lost its southern conquests. Tsar Peter was preparing for a new war with the Turks but did not live to see it through. Under his successors, the situation deteriorated, leading to an attempt by the nobility to limit the Tsar"s power. Empress Anna Ioannovna, with the support of the guards, abolished these restrictions and continued the course set by Peter the Great. Europe was embroiled in a struggle for the Polish throne, while the Swedes engaged in secret correspondence with the Turks, whose forces constantly threatened Russian lands, and Russia"s allies proved unreliable.
