Edith Wharton, an American novelist and short story writer, captured the lives of people during the late nineteenth century, a period of decline in American history. She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1921. Wharton was also acquainted with prominent figures of her time, including President Theodore Roosevelt.
