Lady Arundell's fall down the stairs was initially dismissed as an accident, caused by a rubber ball. However, the injured lady suspected that one of her relatives had orchestrated the event. She wrote to the renowned detective Hercule Poirot for assistance. By the time her letter reached him, Lady Arundell had died, and her considerable inheritance passed to her companion. Poirot cannot revive the unfortunate lady, but he can find her killer, with the help of her fox terrier, Bob.
