Jodi never sought membership in the high school elite known as the Thrashers. Her lifelong friendship with Zack Thrasher, however, brands her as one of them in the eyes of her peers. Despite feeling distinct from the other privileged and talented Thrashers, Jodi benefits from her social standing, especially in contrast to her difficult home life. The apparent suicide of Emily Mills, a girl fixated on Zack, casts a shadow over the group. When Emily's diary surfaces, suggesting she was bullied to death by Zack and his friends, they face ostracization and legal charges. However, a series of unsettling events and Jodi's own secrets within the diary raise doubts about the narrative.
