Alexey Ivanov, 2024
During the era of Peter the Great's reforms, Russia was transforming, even in Siberia, where the emerging empire clashed with medieval ways. Peoples, beliefs, and destinies mingled in this turbulent melting pot. Swedish prisoners, Bukharan merchants, convicts, indigenous peoples, chroniclers, architects, Chinese smugglers, schismatics, shamans, missionaries, and Dzungars β all of them, whether in conflict or cooperation, shaped the face of Russian Asia. The threads of human fates, begun in the first book, now tie into tight knots, where characters test if they are chosen by Siberia, if the souls of the self-cursed will ascend, if regiments can conquer the steppes and Dzungar hordes, and how the old battles the new in the eternal dispute between the Poet and the Tsar.
