The protagonist of this trilogy travels in his dreams to strange, semi-fantastic worlds, transforming into a twelve-year-old boy. In one such world, he meets a trumpeter named Valerka and his younger brother Brat. The boys must return to this same fortress five hundred years earlier; otherwise, the enemy will win a battle and destroy their hometown. In another world-hopping journey, our hero, alongside Valerka and Brat, confronts the Great Chancellor, a dictator who pits the fortress city's inhabitants against each other and orders children killed in the name of a supposed "destined future." From a desolate, dead world, they are helped to escape by Yashka—an eternal pearl, a living crystal, a drop of stardust. Like Sergheyka from "Orange Portrait with Freckles," he wanders between two worlds—Earth and Mars. Here on Earth, he is an ordinary boy, a dreamer and fantasist. There on Mars, he is a wise prince, dedicating all his strength to ending the senseless slaughter between local tribes and thus saving the planet from destruction.
