Vasily Alekseevich Maklakov (1869—1957), a member of the Central Committee of the Cadet Party and a deputy of the State Duma for several convocations, was a prominent Russian politician of the early 20th century. He shared the aspiration for Russia's renewal characteristic of many of his contemporaries. Maklakov encountered the October Revolution in Paris, where he was sent by the Provisional Government as ambassador of the Russian Republic. In the 1930s, re-evaluating the events leading to the revolution and the roles of various political forces, V.A. Maklakov wrote memoirs about the activities of the First and Second State Dumas. In them, he shares reflections on the outcomes of his revolutionary endeavors. These books have never been published in Russia and are presented here for the first time.
